With the league already secured, the only thing that Hyde had to play for was the record number of points in the league.

It was a dreary day on the low, and Hyde welcomed Bollington on day that was threatened by intermittent rain and wind. The pitch looked flat, and the outfield was greasy from light showers. Prior to the game, Hyde were presented with their trophy for winning the league, but a win was wanted all the same. With his last toss for Hyde, Danny Berry won the toss and decided that Hyde would bat first.

Partridge and Balderson opened once more. The wicket, while flat, was playing a lot slower than first appeared. Many a short ball went unpunished due to players going through the shot too early. This proved to be the downfall of Balderson, playing on for 4. Fisher joined Partridge and the pair grafted away. They added 34 for the second wicket, which saw Partridge pass Duffy for the clubs leading run scorer. Partridge departed soon after, snicking off for 28. Fitzsimmons joined Fisher and the pair seemed to over come the demons in the wicket, and they both settled in. The ball found its way to the fence at a steady rate. Both batsmen raised the bat, at near a run a ball each. The partnership was 132 when it was finally broken, Fitzsimmons going for 57. Berry then strode to the wicket for his last innings. When Don Bradman retired, it is said that he got a duck because he couldn’t see for the tears in his eyes. Berry had no such problem, settling in. Fisher finally succumbed to the bowling on 85, LBW to Horsefield. A top knock, on the back of his first Hyde 50 in his last innings. This brought Young together with Berry, and as happened so many times this year, the pair began to dismantle the bowling attack, crunching 4s and 6s like there were no fielders. Berry passed 50, which was much deserved and a fitting end for him. He and Young added a rapid 97 before Berry departed, skying to Hough off Dickinson for 76. Young continued in a similar vein, but was caught for 39 on the very last ball of the innings, leaving Hyde 307/6, our biggest score in the league all season.

With Balderson under another bowling prohibition, it was Cranmer with the new ball once more, opening up with Whittaker. Hyde didn’t have to wait long for their first wicket, Whittaker producing an absolute Jaffa to remove Barrass 3rd ball. Cranmer also struck early, with a bizarre wicket. Longhorn’s edge staying low and crashing into the keepers pads, only for the ball to ricochet into the outstretched hand of Partridge at silly point. Mackinnon attempted to keep Yaksender company, but he was bowled by Cranmer. Dickinson didn’t last long either, becoming Cranmer’s 3rd victim, caught by Fitzsimmons, with a well held grab coming forward. When Lomas was bowled by Cranmer, leaving Bollington 42/5, they were in serious bother. The other Dickinson managed to hang around however. He allowed Yaksender to score freely. The pair added 89, seeing Yaksender past his 50, before Dickinson came down the track to Chew, being yorked and ultimately stumped by Allcock. Henshall came out playing shots, adding a relative quick 14, before being trapped LBW by Dawber. Whitehouse manged contribute to a partnership of 58 with Yaksender, which saw him past his 100. Whitehouse departed for 20 after a Partridge over, full of variety, saw him bowled from the last ball. Yaksender continued in his destructive batting, joined by would be opener Hough, he passed his 1000 runs for the season. However, Bollington were never going to chase 308 and finished 240/8, with Yaksender carrying the bat for 147.

This team has shown great resilience this year. Other players might have found new premier league clubs to play for, but this team managed to stay together and find a run of form that should hopefully stand us in good stead for next season. It was a sad day however, with Bez finishing his last game. He has been captain almost as long as I have been scoring. I have seen him lead Hyde to historical highs, and I have seen him weather the storm of last season and come back stronger. For him to go out on top is what he deserves. 2 Premier league titles, 1 Cheshire Cup, 1 T20 Cup and now a 1st Division Title, he will be sorely missed by all. I shall see you all again next season.
