I have some very sad news...
Peter Hardman, for many years our Chairman, Groundsman, and before that first team captain, passed away this morning. He was 78.
Dave Hardman, Pete's son, has asked me to notify you all on behalf of the family….
As you probably know Peter has been battling lung cancer for the last few months. Recently the disease had spread.
Despite this he was a regular spectator this summer and has attended all recent General Committee meetings, the last one only two weeks ago.
I must say I have been more than taken by his spirit and bravery, as everyone who has spoken to him during this time must have been.
It has been remarkable how he has coped, with such apparent positivity.
At the same time Peter has been at pains to point out what great support he has had from Lillian, who I have no doubt will be in all your thoughts.
For many years Peter was the embodiment of the club, dedicating his life to the various tasks he undertook. He was once referred to by one young onlooker as "Mr Cricket club" and it is hard to imagine Hyde cricket without thinking of Peter's influence.
As Captain he will be remembered for leading the club to one of it's greatest triumphs when the first team won the Central Lancashire league in 1981.
As Chairman he oversaw many changes, as the club moved leagues and rose to the various challenges. Notably he was instrumental in setting up our junior practice nights, with professional coaches.
As groundsman, possibly his greatest achievement, he was responsible for the improvements to playing facilities we have maintained to this day.
Hyde Cricket and Squash has lost a great servant.
I’ll let you know as soon as I receive funeral arrangements.
