Hyde first team wins Cheshire cup

Hyde's Cricketers were this morning waking up with very sore heads...

Yesterday, despite poor weather, and home advantage for heavily favoured Chester Boughton Hall, who the day before had signed off in the Premier League as Champions, Hyde CSC emerged as winners in a low scoring match, dominated by some fine bowling.

On a grey afternoon in Chester, the home team won the toss and opted to bat first on what appeared an excellent batting surface.

Whilst Hyde were able to field a very strong looking line up, they were slightly hindered by the fact Lancashire man, George Balderson, was carrying an injury and was therefore unable to bowl.

Unfazed, opening partners Glenn Hannah and Jason Whittaker tore into the home side, who's early order is amongst the best in club cricket.

Whittaker was a model of consistency, providing a superb foil for his younger partner, who bowled with genuine hostility.

Chester recovered from the early loss of Goodwin, LBW to Whitaker, to make early progress with some aggressive stroke play.
In fact, with the game in only the 7th over, Chester were 43 for 1, when Hannah struck to remove the accomplished Money for 16, well caught at slip by Duffy, to start the procession.

Hannah flies home to Australia on Wednesday, and appeared determined to sign off with the Cheshire cup, to cap what has been a highly impressive season.

Both Hannah and Whittaker tormented their illustrious hosts, bowling unchanged for their full allocation of 9 overs each.
When they were eventually replaced by Cranmer and Turner, they had reduced Chester to 70 for 7, in one of the best opening stints of bowling to grace such a big game.

Despite resistance from Aspen (29) and a late partnership of 36 between Williams and Metcalfe, Hyde continued the bowling onslaught, to dismiss Chester for a significantly below par 105, from 25.2 overs.

Hannah with the best of the figures, returning a match analysis of 9 overs, 4 wickets, for 38 runs.
Whitaker took 3 for 31, whilst spin bowler Danny Cranmer took 2 for 27.
Cole Turner with the other dismissal, took 1 for 8.

In reply Hyde's batters looked solid, particularly openers Partridge and Young, who put on 52 for the first wicket, effectively sealing the victory.

Ironically on a day dominated by Hyde's pace attack, it was Chester's spinners who gave the travelling fans from Hyde some nervy moments late in the game, reducing the eventual winners to 96 for 5, before Cranmer strode to the wicket and confidently struck the winning runs to bring a memorable team performance to a close.

Hyde's celebrations went on late into the night, starting with a lively coach ride back to Werneth Low and then several long hours of song and merriment back at the club.

Well Done to Tommy Partridge in particular, winner of Cheshire's premier cup completion in his first year as captain, to Glenn Hannah, our Aussie, for his Man of the Match performance with the ball, and to all the players who performed admirably and crucially kept their nerve in a tense and nervy cup final.

Thanks for a great day out in Chester lads.

Regards
