Dear Members,
As most of you know, Howard Kerr passed away at his home in Woodley, a week last Thursday. He was 96.
He leaves behind his lovely wife Lorraine and his son Neil. Both were at his bedside.
Howard was such a wonderful servant to Hyde Cricket and Squash Club, as a player and as our long standing Treasurer. A role he fulfilled with aplomb for 5o years!
Such was Howard's longevity it is almost impossible for some of us who knew him to think of the club without him being there...
Described by his old pal and long standing co-committee member Jim Mottram as being one of the key "pillars" of the club, Howard often held things together when others were fearing the worst.
He was also heavily involved during a resurgence, in the 1970's, when amongst other things the pavilion we still occupy was being built.
Howard saw good times and bad. Always finding ways to get more from the club's limited resources and still make ends meet.
These days, with the club occupying a relatively prosperous position amongst Cheshire cricket's elite clubs, it's hard to imagine the lengths Howard and his contemporaries, the likes of Ted Bowdon, Peter Hardman, Albert Hill and Geoff Oldham, had to go to. Often putting their hands in their own pockets, so to speak.
The photo opposite shows Howard, on the right of the picture, meeting the Mayor of Tameside, with his friend Ted Bowdon, around the time of his retirement as Treasurer in July 2017.
If you'd like to pay your last respects to one of Hyde Cricket and Squash Club's true greats and one of the nicest men you could ever meet, please put these details in your diary...
