Paul Marshall #Q&ATAKE14

User 173190027 Feb 2015 - 11:31

Twice a week until the season we will be picking random players, past or present and asking 10 - 12 personal questions.

Full Name: Paul Marshall
DOB: 05/10/1961
Clubs: Newton, Ashton, Hyde, Dukinfield, Longsight, Flowery Field, Mottram
Nicknames: Marshy

Q1 – What are your best memories of your career?

Winning the Central Lancashire League with Hyde CC in 1981. Winning the league with Dukinfield in 1992. Winning the Saddleworth League with Flowery Field in 2003. Also, having the privilege to play with and against some of the best players in the world and making many friends from home and abroad throughout my cricket career.

Q2 – Have you ever regretted anything throughout your career? (If so, what would you do differently given the chance again)

I haven't regretted anything. My ambition was to experience different leagues and not to just stay at one club throughout my career - of which i did.

Q3 – Who is the most talented player you’ve ever played against and why?

I have played against many talented players so it would be very hard to choose. Mainly professionals such as, Joel Garner, Colin Croft, Geoff Lawson, Franklin Stevenson, Ezra Mosley, Mike Whitney, Carl Hooper, Andy Roberts and many more. I have also played with some great amateurs which include, David Schofield from Littlebrough and Mel Whittle.

Q4 – Who is the most talented player you’ve ever played with and why?

Bruce Edgar and Jim Allen. Bruce for his professionalism and a near perfect technique. And Jim Allen for his aggression and simply because I've never seen anyone hit a ball so hard!

Q5 – Who is the quickest bowler you’ve ever faced? (Any stories about your experience)

All of the players above i mentioned earlier were all equally quick, but the most fearsome would have been Ezra Mosley. Whilst batting in a game against Ezra at Hyde, not one player was fielding in front of the wicket. The Wicketkeeper and slips were almost on the boundary. Ezra wraps me on the bats and they all go up for an LBW shout. To Ezra's dismay, the umpire gives me ''Not Out.'' Ezra's team-mate Schoey shouts out to the umpire ''We'll take your word for it, you're closer than us''. In the same game, Ezra bowled a bouncer to Andy Swain which flew over his head and his the sight screen on the full.

Q6 – In your eyes, who is greatest Hyde CC cricketer?

Bruce Edgar.

Q7 – I’m sure you have a few.... Name some dressing room stories?

I have so many stories, i could write a book on them. But just a couple of clean ones... - I left a pair of trainers in the changing rooms that i had for a couple of years, they were pretty much worn out and i decided that i didn't want them anymore. 2/3 weeks later, i was stood at the bar and in walked Paul Kennaman wearing which looked like my old worn out trainers. I said to Paul ''I used to have a pair like that, where did you get them from?'' Paul replied, ''I found them in the changing rooms, so i took them home, gave them a scrub up and they're as good as new'' - Paul went on to wear them trainers for about 5 years after that. Paul wasn't one for spending much money on clothes.
Talking of clothes, around the late 80's we had a team which were very much into buying clothes and looking smart. John Buckley had purchased some brand new very expensive jeans and claimed they were fire proof. Paul Gledson decided to test out the jeans to see if they were. He took his lighter to them to try and set them on fire but Buck went balistic to all our amusement.
Another story regarding Paul Kennaman which brings a smile to my face, was his ability to break wind at will - As i am myself. One of us would do it and then the other would follow! We would both be in stitches whilst letting them rip, we made a great double act. We sounded like a brass band.

Q8 – Who was your dressing room buddy?

No-one in particular. Just the whole team. I'd like to think they were all my mates.

Q9 – What is your proudest moment so far in your career?

Making my Central Lancashire League debut at the age of 15, Winning league titles in 3 different leagues, scoring 50s against some of the names above i mentioned, and being fortunate enough to play against some of the worlds best ever cricketers.

Q10 – Name the best XI you’ve ever played with... (5 batsmen, 1 all-rounder, 1 WK and 4 bowlers)

1. Bruce Edgar (Hyde / New Zealand)
2. Errol Harris (Hyde / Tasmania)
3. Jim Allen (Hyde / West Indies)
4. Trevor Barsby (Hyde / Queensland)
5. Scott Hookey (Hyde / Tasmania)
6. Vibert Greene (Hyde / Gloucester / West Indies) (All Rounder)
7. Alan McCellan (Ashton / Derbyshire) (WK)
8. Madan Lal (Ashton / India)
9. Derek Parker (Ashton) (Pro)
10. Mohammed Asim (Flowery Field) (Pro)
11. Andrew Dyson (Hyde / Glossop)
